The oil drain plug on my car got rounded over due to a number of factors (foremost that the dealership had left it far too tight after their final inspection/maintenance appointment but also that the manual indicates a 13mm head where a 1/2" tool fits far better and I made the poor choice of using a 12 point socket which compounded the size problem but I digress).
I couldn't get the plug out with a vice grip... it only rounded the head worse. I ordered these on the advice of some random strangers on car enthusiast forums and I gotta say, it was an excellent recommendation. It took me about 5 minutes to get the stuck plug out. I just tapped the tool onto the head with a small sledge hammer then put a little bit of aggression into breaking the overtightened plug free. If you have an impact wrench, that would definitely be the way to go. I didn't feel like running air hoses, so I just put a box wrench on the extractor and tapped the wrench gently but firmly with the sledge hammer. After about 1/8 of a turn, it came off the rest of the way by hand. The hardest part was disengaging the tool from the removed plug. I had to grab the threads of the plug with a vice grip and turn the extractor in the tighten direction with a wrench. I shredded the threads of the plug in doing so, but that's no worry since the plug was ruined anyway.
